In many hospitals the relation with patients and their visitors is not optimal. Since the patient is often treated as an object of medical study, the patient is not treated with dignity and respect, which the patient in fact needs more of during his/her hospitalization.
This hospital has been serving, for 400 years, the poorest members of the population. These people come from far away to "their" hospital. When hotel costs are unaffordable, family members of long-term patients frequently overnight in the hospital (like here under the bed). Photo: Stg. Huize Aarde |

Only in this ward beds, floors, walls and equipment are well maintained. Also the patients get bed sheets from the hospital. Is the reason for this that doctor in charge of this ward is also the director of the hospital? Photo: Stg. Huize Aarde |

Another ward in the same hospital. In this ward TBC-patients lie next to all kinds of other patients. There is no special area for patients with contagious illnesses. In this room patients must use their own bed sheets. Photo: Stg. Huize Aarde |

In the intensive care area there is little room for movement. Moreover, the area is warm and humid. |
